Ok so (I think) it’s done, what do you think?

Question by Judgerz: Ok so (I think) it’s done, what do you think?
Please, I really want constructive criticism! Let me know if there’s something you don’t like. I have until the 15th to send it in.

Dogs, those furry things that live in the house, make great companions. In fact, there are dogs in 39% of the homes in America. But how can you make sure you’re getting a great dog? One that will have a happy long life, as free as possible from possible genetic issues. How can you make sure you aren’t funding an irresponsible breeder, or worse, a puppy mill?
I will always endorse adopting a dog. Pound dogs can make the best of friends. You can check out Petfinder.com or visit one of my favorite local shelters, Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter in East Hanover (their website is available at www.njshelter.org).
But if you don’t want to adopt for one reason or another, keep these tips in mind when selecting a breeder.

-NEVER buy pet store puppies.
Pet stores get their dogs from disgusting places known as puppy mills. The dogs live in small cages their entire lives, exposed to the elements. They’re kept only to be breeding machines and fund the puppy miller’s pocket. Sick dogs receive no vet care at all. Bitches are bred every time they go into heat, which is twice a year. Once they can’t produce any more pups, they’re disposed of.
Read more about puppy mills at www.prisonersofgreed.org

-Labradoodles, yorkie-poos, and other “designer dogs” are only bred by irresponsible breeders.
There is NO way at all to predict what you’re going to get with a mixed breed. Breeders may claim that they’re hypoallergenic and healthier than purebreds; however this is not the case. They can inherit either coat. Well bred purebreds are much healthier than a puppy who is the result of two random untested dogs being thrown together. Responsible breeders DO NOT breed mutts. Every purchase of a designer dog helps encourage a backyard breeder produce more mutts exactly like the kind being put to sleep every day.
For more information on designer dogs, go to http://www.canismajor.com/dog/poodogs.html

-Teacups do not exist
Teacup is a fancy name backyard breeders slap onto runts for an extra buck. There is NO SUCH THING as a teacup. The smallest dog you can get is Toy, which for many dogs such as the Maltese, Shih-Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier, and Pomeranian, is the only size available. Dogs labeled as “teacup” are generally unhealthy and expensive.
Read more at http://www.thebombpoms.com/Teacups.html

-Never buy a dog online without meeting the mother (and when possible, the father) and seeing its living conditions in person.
This one is possibly one of the worst. Someone puts up an adorable picture of a puppy and once you pay for it, it’s yours. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately there is so much that can go wrong.
Without actually going out and meeting the breeder and puppy, you don’t know how the dog is being treated. For all you know you could be dealing with a puppy mill. Often the dogs come sick, flea infested, and full of worms. Sometimes no dog is sent at all. Other times they send a dog other than what’s pictured. If the dog is deathly ill, many of these awful breeders may offer another puppy. However they very well know that most people would feel too bad and just keep the dog.
Please, please, don’t buy a dog online.

Ok, so now you have a basic idea on what to avoid, but what marks a good breeder?

-Responsible breeders show their dogs.
They will actively participate in confirmation competitions field trials, agility, and much more. Many good breeders will breed only champion dogs; there are still responsible breeders that show but may not have gotten a championship for their dog yet. Beware breeders who claim their dog has champion bloodlines. This could mean one or two champions several generations back, which would have very little effect on the poorly bred animal today.

-Dogs that are not show quality are sold on a spay/neuter contract.
Show quality simply means that the dog has traits that closely meet the standard for that particular breed. If a breeder is lucky, there may be one or two show quality dogs in a litter. The rest are usually sold as pet quality. This overall means very little if you’re only looking for a companion. There may be some minor faults that would disqualify or cost the dog points in the show ring. Pet quality dogs make great pets, but are not suitable for breeding. If the person selling you your dog doesn’t care if you breed him or have him neutered, avoid it.

-Dogs are tested before breeding, ALWAYS.
Testing does not mean having the dog looked over by a vet. There are many tests that should be done on the parents. Depending on the breed there may be more or less.
A few commonly done tests are:
OFA (Orthopedic issues)
PennHIP (Hip Dysplasia)
BAER (Hearing)
CERF (Eyes)
Please keep in mind that many of these tests can’t be done
Please keep in mind that many of these tests can’t be done until the dog is over two years old. If one of the parents are under that age, go elsewhere.

-Responsible breeders usually only have 2 or 3 breeds at the maximum.
While most only have one breed, many are very focused on other breeds of dogs. Keeping track of 2+ breeds is a real job. If you are looking at a breeder and you notice they have 4, 5, 6, or even more breeds of dogs, most likely they aren’t reputable and are pumping out poorly bred puppies for a quick dollar.

-Litters are available once a year or less frequently.
Having a litter of puppies is a very difficult and time consuming task. If you notice that the breeder you’re looking at has puppies available very often, use the other tips given to decide if they’re responsible.
Remember, no matter where you get your new friend from, spay and neuter! If we were to home every animal in the US alone, every person would need to own 6 dogs and 9 cats. That means a family of
a family of four would have 24 dogs and 36 cats. There are many benefits to fixing your pets. For the girls, spaying completely stops messy heat cycles, reduces the risks of mammary gland tumors and ovarian and uterine cancer, and may extend her life. For the boys, neutering may stop your dog from marking and wandering, may reduce aggressive behavior, eliminates the risk of testicular cancer, and minimizes the risk of prostate disease. If you still have any concerns talk to your vet.

Thank you everyone so far, PP thank you a lot too. I’m glad I posted it because I didn’t notice a lot of those mistakes.

I’ll play Grammar Nazi, hold please. icon smile Ok so (I think) its done, what do you think?

Your first paragraph is a wee bit shaky, and while it does point on the things within the newsletter, it needs some work. Such as…(I’ll * my changes):

I’m not a fan of the opening statement. I had to read it twice to figure out what you meant.

*Dogs are those furry things that live in the house, and by coincidence, they make great companions as well!* In fact, there are dogs in *at least* 39% of the homes *across* America.
*But the 39% is expanding, and more and more people are getting puppies to add as family members.* (Never start a sentence with ‘but’, it looks off.) *However, a pressing question is how* can you make sure you’re getting a great dog? One that will have a happy long life, as free as possible from (took out the second “possible” no need to use it twice in one sentence) genetic issues. How can you make sure you aren’t funding an irresponsible breeder, or worse, a puppy mill?

(is this article in first person, or directed towards an audience like a newsletter is? If its in newsletter formatting, try to avoid first person statements like “I”.)

*There are hundreds of dogs coming and going from your local shelter, and these dogs make the best of companions and friends*. You can check out Petfinder.com or visit one of my favorite local shelters, Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter in East Hanover (their website is available at www.njshelter.org).

-In the NEVER BUY PET STORE..-
Once they can’t produce any more pups, they’re disposed of.

I’d try: When the female dogs have run their breeding course, they are left to starve to death, or are disposed of in several disturbing manners such as drowning.

-In the TEACUP..-
Put quotes around “teacup” to emphasize its fakeness.

The rest of the article/newsletter is fantastic! Aside from a few organizational issues and grammatical problems its awesome!

Will spaying a 7 year old dog help curb it’s prey drive for cats?

question from Bren ? Spaying is a 7 year old dog containment his prey drive for cats
We have recently taken on a yellow lab that was un-neutered (if it was being transported away on Kijiji). We have all their shots (which were never done before) and she is now licensed and in little more than a month to be neutered (at which time (if it is under), they are also micro-chipped taken). We also have 2 cats (which we adopted 7 years ago), and another dog we had before we go home (a cross between a Beagle and Puggle ~ ~ a pug we adopted him from the SPCA) placed. He is neutered. She’s doing much better now with the Puggle (the owner informed me when I got the lab, they just went into heat at the end of December, but said she was over it by then (2 wks later)), although it was a good deal closer to the Moody Puggle it for a week or so, at first. Now (it’s been 3 1/2 weeks since we took the yellow lab), and they are fine together. She’s still a touch moody, but very much better now (learned the Puggle seems to withdraw and let them dominate the role (she’s older) have) and they seem to get used to his presence haben.Allerdings cats are always a another topic. One of the cats (the Siamese) came pretty soon (as he is very social), and the lab seems more accustomed to it (although it still shows interest in him, I’m not comfortable, is not of a ‘stalking’ nature) … But the black cat has to come a little bit more skiddish around, and if the lab she sees, she wants to go up to her (but she once again picked up on this past weekend) and that gave me little confidence in their familiarity to the black cat (or even the Siamese in this case) used to. I watch them like a hawk (more than ever now) and am always redirected her when she discovered the cat. I’m not sure that I help her become accustomed to them in this way before, but I think it will help her to know that they are not to touch …? I safely disconnect all the animals, if I around the house (the two cats kept together, of course) and I have to leave you can not know for lange.Ich castration will probably slow it down a bit, in many ways (because of their age), but they will drive their prey for the cats pretty much gone? I pray it will, but I’m also try to return to their home (the same) as this is always a very disturbing problem for our family (not to mention all of the cats). I contacted the previous owner 2-3 ask for days after I put the lab back home (again), if it did not, they will take it back (the first time I asked her if I was at her house, she just said, ‘Oh, I’m sure it will work out I ‘(& how naive I was, I knew she was that her dog better than me, and took her at her word)). When I contacted them 2-3 days later to ask again, I was told that the man would work from home 3 days / wk & the dog at 2-2-year-old daughter cartoons clocks & he does not bark could his work done during that time (and she said she and her daughter could not stand by with, as they can go back). After I said that I did not bother to write back because I thought it would make no difference, and realize that I am to find her another home, on my own. To keep our options open, I brought her a message back home in the meantime. Unfortunately, the Humane Society here, would not animals who have a home (I have already contacted her about) ~ the only thing I appreciate about our spca, no dogs, there is a “time line” for adoption, they ~ held be until the right home (no matter how long it takes) to have her spayed finden.Wir if they are not referenced again until mid-March, and we give it only on the right side at home (and have asked that the user with a $ 200. Downpymt their Vet (& show proof of payment shall, for us) to prove that they are serious about their adoption, and have them neutered (if it is re-homed before her spay surgery due to with our apt.), and they are also required to meet the strict criteria we have not gefragt.Dies was meant to be an experiment, I had the best intentions, and every belief that this would work (the dog Wisperer makes it look so easy). I’m trying to do the right thing, and we are responsible pet owners (but experience unfortunately not just enough to know what we would join ~ ~ ~ V ~ ~ aux put more than one dog in our household are especially if a dog has problems with it in her nature to correct and difficult). If that does not neutering take most of their prey drive away, I fear we are certainly not in the be able to behalten.Ich they read the article from someone who is one of my earlier questions about the Yellow Lab & the cats written answer, but I was concerned that it is too late, that has been attempted here, as already being used in the house without crated I & I worry that she is now, can re-fire on us. Please correct me if I’m wrong liege.Es I’m really sorry, my questions are so long, but often I think if I do not explain where I come from, then I just get more questions than answers. icon wink Will spaying a 7 year old dog help curb its prey drive for cats? ~ ~ ~ V reading & answering a OptionIch just wanted to mention is that when I contacted the owner of the second time, it was obvious to me and tried to make me aware of was that she would not take it back. That’s why I have not tried on with her and put the display itself Best Answer.

your personality will not change once you castrate them. The Dog Whisperer makes it look easy because it’s TV and worked up to a half-hour show.

I got a Cockatiel and it’s my first time having one. Cockatiel owners, help please?

Question by Nuclear Mongoose: I got a Cockatiel and it’s my first time having one. Cockatiel owners, help please?
Hi, I got a cockatiel on Dec 28, 2008 (Happy New Year guys! ^_^) and its my first time having one. S/hes all yellow with orange checks and I named herm Pikachu XD. His/her previous owners neglected it. Bottom of the cage was full of poop, water bowls were green (I just had to throw them away), nest box had mold growing in it (it was so thick >_>), and they had no perches AT ALL in there! I have no idea how long this poor bird has been like this. They used to have three cockatiels, one just died, and the other flew away, so the poor bird became depressed and started plucking, they let herm free, it came back and kinda got attack by the owner’s dogs T_T I’m just so glad they decided to give it to me (its great everybody in my family know me as the bird lady, so when ever they have a unwanted bird, they think of me). Now s/hes in a better home with a loving parent (me) that cares about him/her. I was going to put herm in the cage it came with, but it was soooo dirty, seriously I couldn’t clean it, had to throw it away. So the bird is in the same cage with my nine budgies and house finch. I trust the cockatiel with them, s/he doesn’t bite them or anything. How long will it take for budgies to get used to such a “big” bird in the cage? How can you tell the gender between male and female on cockatiels by looks, aggression, personality, or vocalizations (males louder than females? you know… that kinda stuff). I’m just curious on what it is, male or female, its a really nice bird, but the little guy is still scared and confused. Since the fact s/he had no perches in the cage, s/he has a very weak grip, but s/he can be on a perch, but a few wobbles here and there. How long will it take for the bird to have a strong grip? Its hard to finger train herm… Do you think its to early to be finger training right now? How can you tell if the cockatiel is young or old? Can you teach cockatiels to talk? How long do they live if given great care? I gave herm broccoli yesterday, and he pecked at it. Any tips. extras, you can say on these awesome birds? Sorry that its so long, but you gatta remember, its my first time having a cockatiel o_O… I’m so happy to have one ^_^

Male cockatiels have brighter colors (like cheek color or head color) and males are also more vocal. Females have dull colors and dont sing

Cockatiels can talk if you put a lot of training into it

cockatiels can live up to 25 years with great care

I dont think its too young at all to start finger training. I’ve had chicks that I handfeed myself and I start training them at 3 weeks old!

I dont think you can tell how old they are
