I got a Cockatiel and it’s my first time having one. Cockatiel owners, help please?

Question by Nuclear Mongoose: I got a Cockatiel and it’s my first time having one. Cockatiel owners, help please?
Hi, I got a cockatiel on Dec 28, 2008 (Happy New Year guys! ^_^) and its my first time having one. S/hes all yellow with orange checks and I named herm Pikachu XD. His/her previous owners neglected it. Bottom of the cage was full of poop, water bowls were green (I just had to throw them away), nest box had mold growing in it (it was so thick >_>), and they had no perches AT ALL in there! I have no idea how long this poor bird has been like this. They used to have three cockatiels, one just died, and the other flew away, so the poor bird became depressed and started plucking, they let herm free, it came back and kinda got attack by the owner’s dogs T_T I’m just so glad they decided to give it to me (its great everybody in my family know me as the bird lady, so when ever they have a unwanted bird, they think of me). Now s/hes in a better home with a loving parent (me) that cares about him/her. I was going to put herm in the cage it came with, but it was soooo dirty, seriously I couldn’t clean it, had to throw it away. So the bird is in the same cage with my nine budgies and house finch. I trust the cockatiel with them, s/he doesn’t bite them or anything. How long will it take for budgies to get used to such a “big” bird in the cage? How can you tell the gender between male and female on cockatiels by looks, aggression, personality, or vocalizations (males louder than females? you know… that kinda stuff). I’m just curious on what it is, male or female, its a really nice bird, but the little guy is still scared and confused. Since the fact s/he had no perches in the cage, s/he has a very weak grip, but s/he can be on a perch, but a few wobbles here and there. How long will it take for the bird to have a strong grip? Its hard to finger train herm… Do you think its to early to be finger training right now? How can you tell if the cockatiel is young or old? Can you teach cockatiels to talk? How long do they live if given great care? I gave herm broccoli yesterday, and he pecked at it. Any tips. extras, you can say on these awesome birds? Sorry that its so long, but you gatta remember, its my first time having a cockatiel o_O… I’m so happy to have one ^_^

Male cockatiels have brighter colors (like cheek color or head color) and males are also more vocal. Females have dull colors and dont sing

Cockatiels can talk if you put a lot of training into it

cockatiels can live up to 25 years with great care

I dont think its too young at all to start finger training. I’ve had chicks that I handfeed myself and I start training them at 3 weeks old!

I dont think you can tell how old they are

Q&A: Aside from massaging, are there any other ways to get a dog use to having it’s paws handled?

issue of ? In addition to massage, there are other ways to use a dog with its paws handled to get
My dog is ten / eleven months old before I told her that I have a puppy care and training book to read and to emphasize that it is important to use a dog to touch her paws treated with / to get her nails. So when I got it I made sure that their feet massaged every day and get her used to it, and they began to enjoy it. However, I am afraid to cut a dog’s nails (It took me 2 years, just cut to work up the courage, my ferrets nails, and I could only do that because there is a “cheat”, which makes it easier). Because of my fear of my dog gets her nails clipped at the groomers when she is maintained (every six weeks). I think the last time they have cut their nails to be short-although there is no bleeding and no-shows that they bled when I picked it up, I noticed that when I touched her paws / nails (about 2 weeks) after this past grooming, she would cringe and pull away her paw. I was massaging her feet since noticed this, but it does not seem to be working, as they are very stressed / stiff when I scheint.Gibt touch her paws / nails, there are other ways to use a dog with its paws handled / nails touch ? get massaged side Best Answer:

start running your hands on her shoulders and legs while she is standing, but stop at the “wrists” about 4 inches above the floor. Discussion whisper / her that she is a good dog when you do this. Gradually down a little further each day until you reach the paw and try to get her leaned a bit to the side that the paw. Make it a little more each day with praise they will accept their paws will be re-treated.

Found brown liquid after having my dog spayed?

Question by Roxcy: Found brown liquid after having my dog spayed?
There is no emergency veterinary care in my area. I don’t know if it is vomit, urine, or diarrhea. She did have normal feces shortly after I found the liquid and she did vomit yellow liquid after giving her water (that may not have been too big of a deal because I may have just given her too much water). So, I don’t know if that means that the brown liquid was definitely urine or if it could still be vomit. Anyways, has anyone else had this happen before? Is it normal?

sometimes after surgery female dogs can give of a bloody discharge. Old blood sometimes looks brown. Spays are actually a pretty invasive procedure and your pet can loose some blood during surgery, if the blood is leaked into the remaining potion of the crevix it can come out later as a brown/ bloody discharge. I would monitor her color by checking her gums (they should be pink) if they look pale you need to contact a vet. Also check her capillary refill time, press on her gums with your finger and count how many seconds it takes for the gums to regain their color.. anything over 2 seconds is considered prolonged, and you should call your vet. If it was a small amount and only happened the once, I wouldn’t worry, just keep a close eye on her. Anesthesia can cause animals to have upset stomachs and also not having eaten in a long time can also mess with them. Yellow liquid vomit is probably stomach acid. Only give her small amounts of food and water to begin with wait a while and if she keeps it down give her some more.

Care/Prep for dog with broken leg? Having surgery done tomorrow?

question by Corinne : Care / Prep for the dog with a broken leg? After the surgery done tomorrow?
My dog broke his leg somehow today. Took to vet and he actually has two breaks and a closed just a hairline fracture in the same area. He goes for surgery tomorrow to remember and wired back together. It is expected that 100% recovery (apart from problems) to make and he’s only a year old and healthy, thank God! Of course I will speak to the vet tomorrow and find out all after care instructions, but I’m wondering if anyone have any helpful advice, tips and tricks on what to expect and how you might be preparing the house for him. Also, I like my children (5.9) to prepare. He is a 50 pounder, English Pointer and the most beautiful dog! Even in his pain and all he always wagged his tail all the time! He already has a cage (crate trained), but I’m not sure how he goes to get it to work with the actors. I am experianced in animal care but wondered how other Delt has to do with this kind of thing easier for the dog and family. Thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give Best Answer:

it finds a quiet place near the outside. Make sure there are no stairs to keep it really quiet. If you see that he is struggling to get up Put a towel under his hips under him and help him get up and go. Make sure all he needs is right beside him water and food, ie. And pick up some pain management for him is Rimadyl. Good luck
